-Genus Disporella
Disporella is a genus of marine bryozoans (phylum Bryozoa) in the order Cyclostomatida, known for forming hard, calcareous encrusting colonies on shells, rocks, algae, and other submerged surfaces. Unlike branching bryozoans, Disporella grows as a thin, spreading crust with a delicate, lace-like or spiral pattern. Each colony is composed of numerous tiny individuals called zooids, which live in tubular, calcified chambers embedded in the crust. The openings of these tubes form a pattern of small circular pores across the surface. When feeding, each zooid extends a lophophore—a crown of fine, ciliated tentacles—used to capture microscopic plankton and organic particles from the surrounding water.
