The family Picidae, commonly known as the woodpeckers, piculets, and wrynecks. Comprising more than 240 species, members of this family are best known for their ability to climb tree trunks and excavate wood using powerful chisel-like bills. Woodpeckers possess several specialized adaptations for this lifestyle, including strong neck muscles, shock-absorbing skull structures, stiff tail feathers that act as props while climbing, and feet with two toes pointing forward and two backward for a secure grip on vertical surfaces. Most species feed primarily on insects and larvae hidden beneath bark or within wood, although many also consume fruits, nuts, seeds, and tree sap.
