Family Cracidae comprises the chachalacas, guans, and curassows, a family of large, primarily arboreal birds found in the tropical and subtropical forests of the Americas. Considered among the most ancient lineages of living gamebirds, cracids range from the southern United States through Mexico, Central America, and much of South America. These birds are generally medium- to large-sized, with long tails, strong legs, and relatively small heads. Most species are brown, black, or chestnut in colour, although some curassows possess striking crests, brightly coloured facial skin, or ornamental knobs on the bill.
