FAMILY TROCHILIDAE

  • Hummingbirds (Family Trochilidae)

Family Trochilidae is the hummingbird family, a remarkable group of small, highly specialized birds found exclusively in the Americas, with the greatest diversity occurring in the tropical regions of Central and South America. Hummingbirds are renowned for their rapid wingbeats, exceptional maneuverability, and unique ability to hover in place while feeding. They possess long, slender bills and extensible tongues adapted for extracting nectar from flowers, making them important pollinators for many plant species. In addition to nectar, they consume small insects and spiders for protein.
