Subphylum Myriapoda comprises the centipedes, millipedes, symphylans, and pauropods, a major lineage of terrestrial arthropods characterized by elongated bodies with numerous body segments and multiple pairs of legs. With more than 16,000 described species, myriapods are found on every continent except Antarctica and inhabit forests, grasslands, deserts, caves, leaf litter, soil, decaying logs, and other moist terrestrial environments. They possess a single pair of antennae, simple eyes or no eyes, and breathe through a network of tracheae.
