Family Strigidae is the family of the true owls, comprising more than 200 species distributed across every continent except Antarctica. These nocturnal or crepuscular birds are characterized by large forward-facing eyes, rounded facial discs that help focus sound, soft feathers that enable nearly silent flight, and powerful talons for capturing prey. Members of the family occupy a wide variety of habitats, from deserts and tropical forests to mountains and grasslands, and feed primarily on rodents, birds, insects, reptiles, and other small animals
