Segmented Worms of Zihuatanejo

PHYLUM ANNELIDA

Phylum Annelida comprises the segmented worms, a diverse group of invertebrates containing more than 20,000 described species that inhabit marine, freshwater, and terrestrial environments worldwide. Members of this phylum are characterized by elongated bodies divided into a series of repeating segments, a true body cavity (coelom), a complete digestive tract, and a well-developed circulatory and nervous system. Segmentation allows for efficient movement and specialization of body regions, making annelids among the most advanced worm-like animals. The phylum includes familiar groups such as earthworms, marine bristle worms, leeches, and tube worms.
