The suborder Heteroptera, commonly known as the true bugs, is the largest and most diverse group within the order Hemiptera, containing more than 40,000 described species worldwide. Members of Heteroptera are characterized by their distinctive forewings, called hemelytra, which are thickened and leathery at the base and membranous at the tips. They possess piercing-sucking mouthparts adapted for feeding on a wide variety of food sources, including plant sap, seeds, fungi, other insects, and vertebrate blood.
