The family Thraupidae, commonly known as the tanagers, is one of the largest and most diverse families of songbirds in the New World, containing more than 380 species. Tanagers are especially abundant and diverse in the tropical forests of Central and South America, where they occupy a wide range of habitats including rainforests, cloud forests, woodlands, scrublands, grasslands, and gardens. Members of this family vary greatly in size, shape, and coloration, ranging from the brilliantly coloured blue, green, yellow, red, and orange species that are among the most striking birds of the tropics to more subdued brown and grey forms. Most tanagers feed on fruits, berries, seeds, nectar, and insects, with different species specializing in particular food sources.
