Zihuatanejo is one of the richest birding areas on the country's western coast because it combines tropical dry forest, mangroves, coastal lagoons, beaches, rocky islands, wetlands, and foothill forests within a relatively small area. These diverse habitats support hundreds of bird species, including both resident tropical birds and migratory species from North America.
​
The region is particularly attractive because nearly half of the species are year-round residents and half are migratory birds arriving from North America during the winter months. This means bird diversity is high throughout the year, with the greatest variety typically occurring from November through March, when migratory shorebirds, warblers, waterfowl, and raptors join the resident tropical species.

More than 320 bird species have been recorded in the Ixtapa–Zihuatanejo region.
