Family Passerellidae is a family of New World sparrows that includes sparrows, towhees, juncos, and longspurs found primarily throughout North and Central America. Although many species are small and subtly colored in shades of brown, gray, black, and white, they display a remarkable diversity of patterns, songs, and ecological adaptations. Passerellids inhabit a wide variety of environments, including grasslands, forests, shrublands, deserts, tundra, and urban areas. Most feed on seeds, insects, and other small invertebrates, often foraging on or near the ground by scratching through leaf litter or vegetation.
