Order Poales is one of the largest and most ecologically important orders of flowering plants (angiosperms), comprising more than 20,000 species distributed worldwide in nearly every terrestrial habitat. Members of this order range from tiny annual herbs to giant bamboos and include grasses, sedges, rushes, bromeliads, and cattails. The largest family is Poaceae, which contains economically vital crops such as Wheat, Rice, Maize, and Sugarcane. Other important families include Cyperaceae, Juncaceae, Bromeliaceae, and Typhaceae. Species of Poales dominate grasslands, savannas, wetlands, marshes, alpine meadows, forests, and even deserts, where they provide food, shelter, and habitat for countless animals.
