Family Fringillidae comprises the true finches, a diverse family of small to medium-sized songbirds found throughout the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Africa. With more than 230 species, finches occupy a wide variety of habitats including forests, woodlands, grasslands, shrublands, mountains, deserts, and urban parks. Members of this family are characterized by their compact bodies, short necks, and strong conical bills specially adapted for cracking seeds. Many species also consume fruits, buds, nectar, and insects, particularly during the breeding season.
