Lizards of Zihuatanejo

SUBORDER SAURIA

Suborder Sauria comprises the lizards, a diverse group of reptiles within the order Squamata. With more than 7,000 living species, lizards occur on every continent except Antarctica and inhabit an extraordinary range of environments, including deserts, tropical rainforests, grasslands, mountains, rocky outcrops, and coastal regions. They are typically characterized by elongated bodies, movable eyelids (in most species), external ear openings, and four well-developed limbs, although some lineages have reduced or completely lost their limbs. Most species are insectivorous, while others feed on plants, fruits, eggs, small mammals, birds, or other reptiles.
