Cardinals and Allies of Zihuatanejo

FAMILY CARDINALIDAE

Family Cardinalidae comprises the cardinals, grosbeaks, buntings, and allies, a family of colourful songbirds found exclusively in the Americas. With more than 50 species distributed from Canada to northern South America, cardinalids inhabit a wide range of environments including forests, woodlands, scrublands, deserts, grasslands, and tropical habitats. Members of this family are generally medium-sized birds characterized by stout, conical bills adapted for cracking seeds, although many species also feed extensively on insects, fruits, and berries. Males of many species are brightly coloured, displaying vivid shades of red, blue, yellow, orange, or green, while females are often more subdued.
