Order Gruiformes comprises a diverse group of birds that includes cranes, rails, coots, gallinules, trumpeters, finfoots, and several related lineages. Members of this order occur on every continent except Antarctica and occupy a wide range of habitats, although many species are associated with wetlands, marshes, swamps, river margins, grasslands, and tropical forests. Gruiform birds vary greatly in size, from tiny rails less than 15 centimetres long to the majestic cranes, some of the tallest flying birds in the world.
