SUPERFAMILY PAPILIONOIDEA

Common Checkered-Skipper

Complex Burnsius communis

Burnsius communis, commonly known as the Common Checkered Skipper, is a small and widespread butterfly in the family Hesperiidae. It is one of the most familiar “checkered skippers,” easily recognized by its bold black-and-white checkerboard pattern across the wings. This species is widely distributed across North America, Mexico, and into Central America, inhabiting open areas such as fields, grasslands, roadsides, and disturbed habitats. It is commonly seen flying low over vegetation or basking with wings open.
