Dainty Sulphur
Nathalis iole
-
Nathalis iole, commonly known as the Dainty Sulphur, is a small butterfly of North America, belonging to the family Pieridae. The upper side of the wings is typically yellow to orange, bordered with dark brown or black margins, especially on the forewings. The hindwings are often paler, and the overall coloration can vary slightly between individuals. The underside is paler yellow with a greenish tint, sometimes with faint markings that help with camouflage when the butterfly rests with wings closed.
This species is widespread across the southern United States, Mexico, and Central America, inhabiting open, dry areas such as fields, deserts, roadsides, and disturbed habitats. Adults are often seen flying low and erratically, frequently close to the ground.
