Dark Kite-swallowtail

Eurytides philolaus

Eurytides philolaus, commonly known as the Dark Kite-Swallowtail, is a striking member of the swallowtail family Papilionidae. It belongs to the “kite swallowtails,” a group noted for their slender wings, bold striping, and long, elegant hindwing tails. It is a butterfly found in Mexico, Central America, and South America. Its habitat is in dry tropical forests, wetlands, and grasslands. Its diet consists of nectar from flowers, rotting fruit, and mud. Its behaviour is to perch on rocks and bask in the sun in the mornings, and fly in search of food during the day. The Dark Kite-Swallowtail has a wingspan of around 3 inches.
