Butterflies of Zihuatanejo

SUPERFAMILY PAPILIONOIDEA

Gilbert's Flasher

Telegonus alector

Gilbert's Flasher (Telegonus alector), is a striking neotropical skipper butterfly found from Mexico through Central America. This medium-sized butterfly typically has a wingspan of approximately 2 to 2.5 inches and is distinguished by its dark, almost black wings that lack the white spots common in related species. One of its most captivating features is the iridescent blue sheen that covers the upperside of its body and the bases of its wings, providing a brilliant flash of colour when viewed in the right light. In their tropical forest habitats, these butterflies are known for their unique resting posture, where adults often roost upside down on the undersides of large leaves to hide from predators.
