Mottled Longtail
Cogia undulatus
-
Cogia undulatus, commonly known as the Mottled Longtail, is a skipper butterfly in the family Hesperiidae. It belongs to the group of pyramid skippers (Cogia), characterized by their angular wings and compact, angled resting posture. This species is typically brown to gray-brown, with a distinctive mottled pattern of wavy lines and subtle markings across the wings—hence the name “mottled.” One of its key features is the presence of small tail-like projections on the hindwings, giving it a delicate longtail appearance. Cogia undulatus is found in Mexico and Central America, inhabiting dry forests, scrublands, and open woodland habitats. Adults are often seen perching quietly on leaves or stems, making short, quick flights when disturbed.
