Butterflies of Zihuatanejo

SUPERFAMILY PAPILIONOIDEA

Tiger Leafwing

Consul fabius

Consul fabius, commonly known as the Tiger Leafwing, is a butterfly in the family Nymphalidae. The upper side is bright orange with bold black markings, resembling a tiger-like pattern that is highly visible in flight. In contrast, the underside is an extraordinary example of leaf mimicry—colored in shades of brown with veins and irregular markings that closely resemble a dead leaf, allowing the butterfly to become nearly invisible when resting with wings closed. This species is found in Mexico, Central America, and parts of South America, inhabiting tropical forests, edges, and clearings. Adults are strong fliers, often seen gliding through forested areas or perching on leaves and tree trunks.
