SUPERFAMILY PAPILIONOIDEA
Whitened Bluewing
Myscelia cyaniris
-
Myscelia cyaniris, commonly known as the Whitened Bluewing, is a striking butterfly in the family Nymphalidae. It is especially notable for its brilliant iridescent blue wings, which shimmer vividly in sunlight and are contrasted by bold white bands and black borders. The upper side of the wings displays this intense blue coloration with clean white markings, making it highly visible in flight. In contrast, the underside is dramatically different—mottled brown and gray, resembling a dead leaf, which provides excellent camouflage when the butterfly rests with wings closed. This species is found in Mexico, Central America, and parts of South America, inhabiting tropical forests, edges, and clearings. Adults are fast, active fliers, often seen darting through sunlit patches or perching on tree trunks and leaves.
