Cauliflower Corals
Pocillopora (Genus)
The genus Pocillopora, commonly known as cauliflower corals, belongs to the family Pocilloporidae. These corals are important reef builders in tropical and subtropical marine environments. They are recognized for their bushy, cauliflower-like growth forms and their adaptability to a variety of reef conditions. They obtain energy from zooxanthellae (symbiotic algae), which perform photosynthesis. They also feed on plankton and organic particles using their tentacles and stinging cells (nematocysts). They play a vital role in reef ecosystems by providing habitat for fish and invertebrates.
