Umimayanthus are primarily suspension feeders, capturing small planktonic organisms and organic particles from the surrounding seawater with their tentacles. They live in close association with marine sponges, growing over or among the sponge tissue rather than living independently on rock or reef surfaces. Colonies may consist of individual polyps scattered across the sponge surface or connected into chains and groups by stolon-like tissue.
