Ants of Zihuatanejo

FOETIDA-GROUP PANTHER ANTS

Genus Neoponera comprises a group of medium to large-sized predatory ants, found primarily in tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas. They are characterized by their robust bodies, powerful mandibles, well-developed stingers, and relatively primitive social organization. Colonies are generally small compared with those of many highly social ants, often consisting of a few dozen to several hundred individuals. These ants typically nest in soil, rotting logs, leaf litter, or cavities in trees and are active predators that hunt a variety of insects, spiders, and other small invertebrates.
