Ants of Zihuatanejo

TRAP-JAW ANTS

Genus Odontomachus comprises the famous trap-jaw ants, a group of predatory ants in the subfamily Ponerinae found throughout tropical and subtropical regions of the world. These ants are renowned for their extraordinarily long, straight mandibles, which can snap shut at speeds exceeding 60 meters per second, making them among the fastest-moving predatory structures in the animal kingdom. The mandibles are held open and locked in place until sensory hairs trigger a rapid strike used to capture prey, defend the colony, or even propel the ant into the air to escape predators.
