Ants of Zihuatanejo

TWIG ANTS

Genus Pseudomyrmex comprises a group of slender, long-legged ants in the family Formicidae. These ants are easily recognized by their elongated bodies, large eyes, and agile movements, adaptations that suit their largely arboreal lifestyle. Many Pseudomyrmex species live in close mutualistic relationships with plants, especially acacias, nesting within hollow thorns and receiving food bodies and nectar from their host plants. In return, the ants aggressively defend the plants against herbivores and competing vegetation.
