Genus Tapinoma comprises a widespread group of small ants in the family Formicidae that occur in tropical, subtropical, and temperate regions around the world. These ants are typically small, soft-bodied, and dark-coloured, with a distinctive anatomy in which the petiole (waist segment) is hidden beneath the front of the abdomen when viewed from above. Many Tapinoma species are highly adaptable and nest in soil, leaf litter, under stones, within rotting wood, or inside buildings. They are opportunistic foragers that feed on honeydew, nectar, dead insects, and a variety of other organic materials.
