Ants of Zihuatanejo

GENUS ACROMYRMEX

Genus Acromyrmex comprises a group of leafcutter ants within the family Formicidae, found primarily in the tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas. These highly social insects are renowned for cutting pieces of leaves, flowers, and other vegetation, not for direct consumption, but to cultivate a specialized fungus that serves as their primary food source. Colonies of Acromyrmex can contain thousands of individuals organized into distinct worker castes, each performing specific tasks such as foraging, nest maintenance, fungus cultivation, and colony defence.
