Genus Parides is a genus of large, brilliantly colored swallowtail butterflies in the subfamily Papilioninae of the family Papilionidae, distributed from Mexico and the Caribbean through Central America and much of South America. Commonly known as cattlehearts, these butterflies are characterized by velvety black wings accented with striking patches of red, pink, green, yellow, or iridescent blue. Many species possess short tails or lack tails altogether, relying instead on their bold warning coloration to advertise their toxicity.
