Genus Phanes is a small genus of Neotropical skipper butterflies in the family Hesperiidae, occurring from Mexico and Central America through parts of South America. These butterflies are generally small to medium-sized and are characterized by dark brown to black wings marked with contrasting translucent, yellowish, or cream-colored spots. Like other skippers, they possess robust bodies, hooked antennae, and a rapid, darting flight. Phanes species are typically found in tropical forests, forest edges, secondary growth, and tropical dry forest habitats, where adults visit flowers for nectar and often perch on low vegetation in sunny clearings.
