The genus Rhinella is a large group of true toads belonging to the family Bufonidae. Species of Rhinella are distributed throughout Central and South America, ranging from southern Mexico to Argentina and occupying a wide variety of habitats, including tropical rainforests, savannas, wetlands, dry forests, grasslands, and urban environments. They are among the most recognizable amphibians in the Neotropics due to their sturdy bodies, dry warty skin, and prominent parotoid glands located behind the eyes. Their coloration is typically shades of brown, grey, olive, or reddish-brown, often providing excellent camouflage against soil and leaf litter. Most species are terrestrial and primarily nocturnal, emerging at night to forage for food. They feed mainly on insects and other invertebrates, although larger species may consume small vertebrates such as lizards, rodents, and other amphibians.

​The Giant Toad (Rhinella horibilis) is one of only two species of Toads documented in the Zihuatanejo area. It is the only species of genus Rhinella found in Zihua.
