Genus Camponotus (carpenter ants) are generally medium to large in size and are best known for nesting in wood, where they excavate galleries and chambers for their colonies. Unlike termites, they do not consume wood but remove it to create nesting space. Colonies may contain thousands of workers and often include distinct worker castes that perform specialized tasks such as foraging, brood care, nest maintenance, and defence. Camponotus ants are highly adaptable and occupy habitats ranging from tropical rainforests and deserts to temperate woodlands and urban areas.
