Ants of Zihuatanejo

ECTATOMMIN ANTS

Genus Ectatomma comprises a group of medium- to large-sized predatory ants in the family Ectatomminae, found primarily in tropical and subtropical regions of Central and South America. These ants are characterized by their robust bodies, powerful mandibles, large eyes, and relatively primitive social organization compared with many more advanced ant groups. Ectatomma species typically nest in soil, under stones, or at the base of vegetation, where colonies are usually modest in size, often consisting of a few dozen to several hundred individuals. Workers are active hunters that prey on a wide variety of insects and other small invertebrates, although they may also collect nectar, fruit juices, and honeydew.
