Description

• Chromolepida nigra is a small leaf beetle in the family Chrysomelidae, subfamily Galerucinae. It has a compact, oval body with predominantly dark or black coloration and the characteristic enlarged hind legs of many flea beetle-like galerucines. Like other members of its group, it is adapted for movement through vegetation and may jump when disturbed.

Range

• Chromolepida nigra occurs in the tropical Americas, including Mexico and parts of Central America. It can be encountered in the Zihua area where suitable vegetation is present.

Habitat

• Usually associated with herbaceous vegetation, shrubs, and other leafy plants in warm tropical and subtropical habitats. Adults may be found on leaves and stems, particularly in forest edges, clearings, scrub, and disturbed vegetation.

Diet

• Adults are herbivorous and feed primarily on plant foliage, producing characteristic small feeding holes or areas of damaged tissue.
