Ganoderma fungi typically have a woody, shelf-like fruiting body. The cap is often reddish-brown, shiny, and varnished-looking. They usually grow on dead or decaying wood, especially hardwoods. Belongs to the group of polypores, which have pores (not gills) on the underside of the cap where spores are released.

Ganoderma (Genus)

Description

  • Ganoderma is a genus of bracket fungi in the family Ganodermataceae. Fruiting bodies are typically tough and woody, with shelf-like, fan-shaped, or hoof-shaped forms. The upper surface is often brown to reddish-brown, frequently with concentric growth zones and a distinctive varnished or lacquered appearance, while the underside bears a layer of small pores. Some species produce a prominent stalk.

Range

  • Ganoderma has a worldwide distribution in tropical, subtropical, and temperate regions. Numerous species occur in Mexico, including Guerrero and the Pacific coastal region, and Ganoderma is well represented around Zihuatanejo where suitable trees and woody substrates are present.

Habitat

  • Species grow on living, weakened, or dead trees, stumps, logs, and buried woody material. They occur in tropical dry forest, humid forest, woodland, scrub, gardens, plantations, and other habitats containing suitable trees. Some species are important wood decomposers and can also cause decay in living trees.
