Coprinellus is a genus of fungi in the family Psathyrellaceae, known for their delicate, ink-cap-like mushrooms. It typically grows on decaying wood. Saprotrophic, decomposing organic matter such as wood chips, leaf litter, dung, or soil rich in decaying plant material.

Description

  • Coprinellus is a genus of small to medium-sized inkcap mushrooms in the family Psathyrellaceae. The fruiting bodies typically have slender stems and delicate, bell-shaped, conical, or convex caps that may be grey, brown, tan, or whitish. Many species have caps with fine grooves or striations, and some undergo partial deliquescence as they mature, with the cap margin breaking down into a dark, ink-like spore mass.

Range

  • Coprinellus has a broad distribution in tropical, subtropical, and temperate regions worldwide. Species occur throughout Mexico, including Guerrero and the Pacific coastal region, and members of the genus may be encountered around Zihuatanejo when suitable moist substrates are present.

Habitat

  • Species of Coprinellus commonly grow on decaying wood, woody plant debris, leaf litter, compost, dung, and other nutrient-rich organic substrates. In tropical regions they may appear in forests, woodland, gardens, disturbed areas, agricultural land, and other habitats following periods of rain and high humidity.
