Species in this genus produce synnemata, which are upright, stalk-like structures formed by the aggregation of conidiophores (spore-producing cells). Stromatographium species are primarily found in tropical regions, where they inhabit decaying plant material.

Description

  • Stromatographium is a genus of microscopic filamentous fungi in the phylum Ascomycota and class Sordariomycetes. It is an asexual fungal genus typified by Stromatographium stromaticum, which represents the asexual state of Fluviostroma wrightii. The fungi produce stromatic, spore-bearing structures on organic substrates and are generally inconspicuous without magnification.

Range

  • Stromatographium has been reported from tropical and subtropical regions, although information on its overall distribution is limited. The genus is known from the Americas and other regions, and its occurrence in Mexico is possible where suitable substrates and humid conditions are present.

Habitat

  • Species are associated with plant material and woody substrates, where the fungus develops on or within decaying organic matter. They are most likely to occur in forested and humid environments on dead or decomposing vegetation, branches, and other plant debris.
