Leafhoppers of the genus Balclutha are small, slender insects characterized by their aerodynamic, wedge-shaped bodies and a typically pale green, straw-coloured, or brownish appearance. Unlike many larger leafhoppers, Balclutha species are exceptionally strong fliers known for their long-distance migratory capabilities, often aided by wind currents to colonize new territories. Their heads are notably wider than the front of the thorax, and they possess specialized hind legs lined with fine spines that allow them to leap great distances when disturbed. They feed by piercing plant tissues to suck out sap.
