Cedusa Planthoppers

Cedusa (Genus)

Description

  • Cedusa is a genus of small planthoppers in the family Derbidae. Adults are delicate, with relatively slender bodies, broad heads, and long, narrow wings that are often held roof-like over the abdomen. The wings may be transparent, pale brown, or lightly patterned, while the body is usually brown, grey, or yellowish.

Range

  • Cedusa is a predominantly Neotropical genus occurring from the southern United States through Mexico and Central America into South America and the Caribbean. Several species occur in Mexico, including along the Pacific slope and in Guerrero, with suitable species potentially encountered around Zihuatanejo.

Habitat

  • Species inhabit tropical and subtropical forests, seasonally dry woodland, scrub, forest edges, clearings, and other areas with abundant vegetation. Adults are typically found resting on foliage and stems, often in shaded or humid parts of their habitat.

Diet

  • Cedusa species are plant-sap feeders, using piercing-sucking mouthparts to obtain fluids from vascular plants. Their hosts include a variety of woody plants, shrubs, herbs, and other vegetation, depending on the species.
