Description

• Stagmomantis carolina is a medium-sized praying mantis in the family Mantidae, commonly called the Carolina mantis. It has a slender body, triangular head with large compound eyes, long spiny forelegs adapted for grasping prey, and long walking legs. Colour varies from green, tan, grey, or brown, often matching surrounding vegetation. Females are generally larger and more robust than males.

Range

• Stagmomantis carolina is native to North America, occurring from the eastern and southern United States into northern and central Mexico. Its Mexican distribution extends into western and southern regions, although its occurrence around Zihuatanejo is uncertain.

Habitat

• It occupies grasslands, meadows, open woodland, forest edges, scrub, gardens, agricultural areas, and other habitats with abundant low vegetation. It commonly rests among grasses, shrubs, and herbaceous plants, where its camouflage allows it to remain inconspicuous while hunting.

Diet

• Stagmomantis carolina is a generalist predator of insects and other arthropods, feeding on flies, moths, beetles, grasshoppers, crickets, true bugs, and spiders. Larger individuals may also capture small vertebrates such as lizards or frogs, particularly when suitable prey is available.
