PHYLUM MOLLUSCA

Ischnochiton Chitons

Ischnochiton (Genus)

Members of this genus typically have eight overlapping dorsal shell plates that are low to moderately elevated and often show fine longitudinal striations or granulation. The plates tend to look smoother and more delicate than those of heavier, rock-armoured chitons. Ischnochiton species are found in shallow marine habitats, most commonly on rocky shores, reef flats, and under stones, from the intertidal zone into shallow subtidal waters. They are strongly adherent grazers, using a muscular foot to cling to hard substrates and a radula to feed on microalgae, diatoms, and biofilms.
