Description

• Scutigera is a genus of centipedes in the family Scutigeridae, commonly known as house centipedes and related long-legged centipedes. Members have flattened bodies, long antennae, and exceptionally long, slender legs that allow them to move rapidly. Unlike most other centipedes, they have relatively large compound eyes. Their bodies are often yellowish or grey with darker stripes or markings, and each trunk segment bears one pair of legs.

Range

• Scutigera is present in Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, Mexico. The genus occurs in many parts of the world, particularly in warm regions, and some species have spread widely through human habitation and transport. The best-known species, Scutigera coleoptrata, is now widespread in buildings across numerous continents.

Habitat

• Members of Scutigera inhabit sheltered, humid environments, including beneath stones, in leaf litter, under bark, and in crevices. Some species commonly enter buildings, where they shelter in basements, bathrooms, storage areas, and other places that provide moisture and prey. They are generally nocturnal and hide during the day.

Diet

• Scutigera species are carnivorous predators that feed on insects, spiders, and other small arthropods. They use their speed and venomous forcipules to capture and subdue prey. By consuming household pests such as cockroaches, flies, and silverfish, some species provide a natural form of pest control.
