Wolf’s Milk is the common name for species in the genus Lycogala, a group of slime molds often mistaken for fungi. Despite its fungus-like appearance, Lycogala belongs to the Amoebozoa, a group of amoeba-like organisms. It is a plasmodial slime mold, meaning it spends part of its life as a mobile, single-celled mass called a plasmodium. Color ranges from pink to salmon-orange. When squeezed, they ooze a thick pink liquid, giving rise to the name “wolf’s milk”. Commonly grows on decaying logs, stumps, and dead wood.
