Description

• Eriophora ravilla is a species of orb-weaver spider in the family Araneidae. It has a rounded abdomen and sturdy legs, with colouration that varies from brown and grey to reddish tones, often with mottled patterns that provide camouflage. Like other orb-weavers, it produces silk and builds a circular web to intercept flying insects. It is generally harmless to people and usually retreats or drops from its web when disturbed.

Range

• Eriophora ravilla occurs in the Americas, including the southern United States, Mexico, the Caribbean and parts of Central America and South America. It is present in Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, Mexico.

Habitat

• This spider inhabits a variety of vegetated environments, including tropical forest, scrubland, woodland edges, gardens and areas around buildings. It commonly builds orb webs between shrubs, branches and other structures where insects are active. It may remain near the web during the night and shelter in nearby vegetation during the day.

Diet

• Eriophora ravilla is a predator that feeds mainly on flying insects and other small arthropods caught in its web. It detects vibrations when prey becomes trapped, then approaches and immobilises it before feeding. Digestive fluids help break down the prey’s tissues.
