As the name suggests, it has a brilliant green breast and throat, often with an iridescent quality that shimmers in the light. Approximately 11–12 cm (4.3–4.7 inches) in length, with a slightly curved black bill adapted for feeding on nectar. Males are often territorial, especially around rich feeding grounds.
