Diet

• Primarily insects, including caterpillars, beetles, cicadas, grasshoppers, ants, termites, and other large arthropods.

• Also feeds extensively on small fruits and berries, particularly figs and other soft fruits.

• Hunts by sitting quietly on a perch before making short flights to pluck fruit or capture insects from foliage or in mid-air.

Range

• Endemic to western Mexico, occurring along the Pacific slope from southern Sonora through Sinaloa, Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, Guerrero, and western Oaxaca.

• Common in the Zihuatanejo region, where it is a year-round resident.

• Inhabits tropical dry forests, semi-deciduous forests, woodland edges, riparian forests, and mature second-growth, generally from sea level to about 1,500 m.

• Most often found in the middle and upper forest canopy.

Male / Female

• Male: Metallic green head, back, and upper breast; bright lemon-yellow belly; white breast band separating the green chest from the yellow underparts; black-and-white barred undertail; and a yellow bill.

• Female: Grayish-brown head and upperparts replacing the male's metallic green, with the same bright yellow belly and white breast band. The tail pattern is similar but slightly duller.

• The sexes are easily distinguished by the male's iridescent green upperparts and the female's gray-brown coloration.
