Diet

• Adults and nymphs: Predatory, feeding on a wide variety of insects and other arthropods.

• Zelus cervicalis is a North and Central American assassin bug, occurring primarily in the southern United States and Mexico, with its distribution extending into parts of Central America.

• It is associated particularly with warm, dry and subtropical regions, although its full distribution is broader than this habitat preference suggests.

• Around Zihua, Zelus cervicalis would likely be considered occasional to locally common, particularly in open habitats and areas with abundant shrubs and herbaceous vegetation.

Habitat

• This species occurs in open woodland, tropical and subtropical scrub, grassland, agricultural areas, gardens, roadsides and forest edges.

• Individuals are generally found on vegetation where they actively search for prey or wait for insects to approach.

• Around Zihua, suitable habitat includes tropical deciduous forest, thorn scrub, forest margins, agricultural fields, gardens and roadside vegetation.

Size

• Zelus cervicalis is a medium-sized assassin bug, with adults generally measuring around 12–16 mm in length, although size varies somewhat between individuals.

• It has the characteristic slender body, long legs, elongated head and prominent piercing beak typical of Zelus.

• The body is generally brownish to reddish-brown, often with contrasting darker areas, providing relatively good camouflage among stems and dry vegetation.

• The forelegs are adapted for grasping prey and may be held in a characteristic raised, ready-to-strike position while hunting.
