SUPERFAMILY PAPILIONOIDEA

Common Scarlet-Eye

Nascus phocus

The Common Scarlet-Eye (Nascus phocus) is a species of skipper butterfly. As its name suggests, it features prominent deep red eyes. In certain lighting, these eyes may appear dark or black, but they are a rich scarlet hue upon closer inspection. This species is found in Mexico, Central America, and parts of South America, inhabiting tropical forests, edges, and clearings. Adults are fast, powerful fliers, often seen darting through shaded areas and perching briefly on leaves.
